  • Q&A Interview with SHRM

    What is ATMatWork?

In today’s tight job market, companies need to get creative to attract and keep talented employees. And, with Millennials and Gen Z entering the workplace, these younger generations are looking for more than just a paycheck. Some companies offer benefits like pet insurance, flexible hours, mental health days and more. ATMatWork offers employers a cost-effective benefit that will save their staff time and money – easy cash access by having an ATM on-site.

How does ATMatWork save employees money in ATM and banking fees?

Despite the rise of credit cards and digital payments, cash remains the number one payment instrument in the U.S, according to the Federal Reserve’s Diary of Payment Choice. Cash representing 30 percent of all transactions; 55 percent of transactions under $10 and 32 percent of payments between $10 and $24.99.

Employees are using ATMs – and the fees they pay for going to the closest ATM can add up quickly. The national average for withdrawing cash is $3.50 and financial institutions charge an additional fee of as much as $2.50 on average for using an out of network ATM. That’s $6 for withdrawing $60.

ATMatWork offers a number of surcharge-free options that allow staff to get cash for lunch, vending or the weekend at no charge. And, some of the options available also save employees the banking fees as well. We offer Brinks paycard fee-free ATMs, bank or credit union branded ATMs, machines that run surcharge-free networks or free for everyone options.

    Can you provide an example?

A Corpus Christi, TX-based company, that employs around 700 workers in two full-time shifts, was looking for a better way to pay their employees and save them money. Aware of the fees their employees paid to cash checks, management decided to make the move from paper checks to Brinks Money paycards.

However, that was only one piece of the solution. They also needed a way to make it easier for their staff to access their funds without having to pay ATM fees and save them time ‒ especially since hourly employees only have a 30-minute lunch hour.

After reviewing the variety of options ATMatWork offers, the Human Resources Director decided on a surcharge-free ATM that would provide free balance inquiries for everyone, and fee-free cash withdrawals and no out of network ATM fees for the majority of their employees – both those who had bank accounts and those who participated in the Brink’s paycard program.

Installation of the ATM in the break room was an immediate success. On average, employees complete 1,600 transactions every month, withdrawing as much as $100,000 over the course of a month and save in excess of $4,600 in fees. Having the ATM in the break room also saves employees a great deal of time because they no longer have to leave work to obtain cash for lunch, vending or leave early on payday to go to the bank.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when implementing ATMs at work?

Installation of an on-site ATM is easy, hassle-free for management and can be completed in two weeks. ATMatWork owns and manages the machine so there is no extra work involved for management. All the employer needs to provide is an electrical outlet and a place to put it. ATMatWork also provides custom marketing materials to help HR professionals promote the benefits of having an ATM on-site.

What do you wish more HR professionals knew about ATMatWork?

Cash remains the number one payment option for Americans, with Millennials relying on cash more than any other demographic. And the less an employee makes the more they rely on cash.

According to the FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, 32.6 million  U.S. households are unbanked or underbanked. In 2017, the survey estimated 25.2% of Americans had either no access or limited access to a bank account or used alternative means such as paycards or pre-paid cards, to access their wages. Virtually all unbanked or underbanked employees belong to households making less than $50,000 annually. These workers, which can least afford it, are subject to fees for check cashing and ATM fees.

Having a surcharge-free ATM on-site is a benefit that companies can offer their employees that will allow them to keep more of their hard-earned wages. It’s affordable as well. In most cases, the cost of having an ATM on-site is less than what the company pays for just one employee to have health insurance.

How important are benefits like this in employee retention?

The cost of ATM fees and out of network fees charged by an employee’s financial institution can quickly add up, and employees know it. If the employer is offering this service, staff are less likely to switch jobs for an extra dollar an hour, especially if their potential new employer does not offer an ATM on-site.

Human Resource Directors know their employees are using the ATM and understand the benefits once they see it in action for themselves. We frequently get calls from HR professionals, who have switched companies, wanting to add an ATM.

  • How Credit Unions Can Launch an Effective Bank at Work Program with On-Site ATMs

Reaching new members through brand awareness and visibility is at the forefront of every credit union’s marketing strategy, especially those with a regional and local focus. There are scores of options, but most aren’t leveraging one of the easiest and inexpensive strategies ‒ a bank at work program with on-site ATMs as the centerpiece. When used to the fullest potential, having ATMs as part of a bank at work program creates lasting partnerships and offer an avenue to open new deposit accounts, loans and market products and services.

    Prospect Smarter, Not Harder

There are likely many candidates in your existing membership base, such as select employee groups (SEGs) that you may have signed up years ago, that would benefit from an on-site ATM and a bank at work program. The first step is to analyze the SEG’s industry, range of salaries and company size. Working with the Human Resources department will also allow you to fully understand the financial needs of the employees.

However, many credit unions don’t believe they can afford to offer ATMs to every SEG. Providing an ATM to SEGs doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. ATMatWork, which specializes in placing ATMs at employee group locations, offers placement options that fit any sized budget ‒ and it’s totally hands off and hassle free for the credit union. There is no need to purchase hardware, load cash, monitor the terminal, send out technicians or carry insurance ‒ ATMatWork does it all.

Tailor Marketing for Each Employee Group

Branding an ATM is one way to build recognition and trust, but don’t stop there. Customizing marketing messages are a simple and effective way to generate new deposit accounts, loans and promote products and services at the ATM. ATMatWork’s unique approach turns the ATM into a dynamic marketing tool with a myriad of changeable content including customizable ATM screens, wraps, toppers and an optional brochure rack. As your marketing messages change, so can your marketing at the ATMs in your SEG locations.

     Regular Visits to the SEG

Once your credit union establishes an on-site ATM as part of your bank at work program, use regular visits to maximize the partnership. Being proactive while visiting the location and using face-to-face interactions to educate, inform and engage with the employees is imperative.

With the right approach and the right partner, credit unions can maximize opportunity to communicate to a captive audience of current and prospective account holders by offering a bank at work program with ATMs as the centerpiece.

  • Why A Surcharge-Free ATM On-Site is a Hot New HR Benefit

Studies show the average employee uses an ATM four to five times each month, typically withdrawing around $60 in cash at each transaction.

However, the vast majority of ATMs in the U.S. are not operated by financial institutions. These “foreign” machines usually result in a fee for use – from both the ATM operator and the ATM user’s bank or credit union. Together these fees average around $6.00 per transaction. This is a considerable investment of funds to get cash.

Paycards are a new and growing trend among employers with 25-35% of U.S. employers switching to the paycard model for employees that are unbanked or do not provide financial institution information for direct deposit. Due to the higher fee rates, these employees end up spending more than the average person when withdrawing cash ‒ and taking home less of the money they have earned.

There is a better way. Companies can help their employees better utilize their funds and save a great deal more of their earnings by offering them a surcharge-free ATM solution ‒ conveniently located within their workplace.

    Safety and Convenience

The workplace is one of the safest places for employees to use an ATM. Having a surcharge-free ATM on-site saves employees the risks of traffic, theft and time constraints while providing additional security through its indoor, on premise location. On-site ATMs are also a convenience, whether money is needed at that moment on the job or for use in after hour’s activities.

    Keeping More of Their Money

On site ATMs also provide the added benefit of helping workers keep more of their hard-earned pay check, as well – when they are partnered with a financial institution and/or surcharge-free network like Allpoint or Money Pass. Allpoint, for instance, has over 1400 financial institutions in its network including national and regional banks, and credit unions as well as the leading pay card providers.

Cash Is King ‒ Especially with Millennials!

MasterCard’s report, “Measuring Progress Towards a Cashless Society” revealed that cash remains the most commonly used method of payment across all ages. This is particularly true for Millennials (those born from 1981 -2000), who currently comprise 33% of the workforce.

Statistics show Millennials are not only technically savvy, they put a great emphasis on convenience. And, as they saw their parents greatly affected by the housing market crash and recession, they have a deep distrust of financial institution. They are the generation pioneering payment alternatives such as PayPal and Venmo – and are more likely to utilize cash than other forms of transaction.

A Hot New HR Benefit – ATM at Work

Representing one-third of today’s workforce, it is more important than ever to stay a step ahead of these technically savvy employees – and other companies who may be looking to lure them away. An ATM at work is just one way to provide convenience and incentive, while helping employees keep their hands on more of their income.

Now offering an Allpoint surcharge-free ATM option, transactions are free for employees who use some of the most popular paycards and bank at the more than 1,400 financial institutions that are part of the network.

And best of all the ATM is hassle-free and, in most cases, less than what you pay in insurance for one employee each month.

  • The Hottest New Employee Benefit: An ATM at Work

Cold hard cash has always appealed to people, and is often a major selling point for employees. But, these days it is more than just the dollar amount on an employee’s paycheck. That is, of course, still of prime interest to employees. However, there are more versatile ways to make sure your employees know you value them and can also keep their cash flowing … providing them with easy access to cash with an ATM at work.

Almost 80% of consumers make payments in cash despite the wide range of other payment options available, according to the U.S. Consumer Payments Outlook Through 2020. Thus, having easy and convenient access to cash is more important than ever to your employees. In fact, the Federal Reserve reports that 1/3 of all consumer transactions are less than $10. And, two-thirds of these are paid in cash.

With today’s increasingly demanding lifestyles, time is an overwhelming factor as employees must coordinate the kid’s carpool, off-site activities, as well as running personal errands, grocery shopping and preparing meals — and then getting ready to do it all over again the next day.

ATMs At Work = WIN. WIN!!

Access to a convenient ATM is vital for your busy employees. Having an ATM at your workplace provides a MAJOR benefit … and it generally costs the company little to nothing for this tremendous employee perk!! A bank or credit union-branded ATM or an Allpoint ATM on-site not only provides your employees with the convenience they want but surcharge-free transactions as well.

An Allpoint ATM provides surcharge-free access to employees who bank with over 1400 of the leading U.S. financial institutions, as well as some of the top paycard providers. Your employees who bank with Allpoint network member financial institutions can use the ATM at work as often as needed with NO FEE. That’s right – there’s no fee at the ATM or from the bank.

All that is needed is an electrical outlet, and a secure, convenient place to house the ATM at your workplace.

With an ATM at work, you can help provide a solution to the cash needs of your workforce and place their focus where it can best be utilized – on work. Is it any wonder having an ATM at work for employees is one of the hottest new benefits HR directors are offering?
